Personal Care and Companionship

If it’s become more challenging to manage daily personal activities or housekeeping tasks, our trained and experienced home health aides can assist you.

Just a few example services include:

• Helping those with dementia or other cognitive impairments who simply need a companion to keep them living safely at home

• Bathing, grooming, using the toilet, and dressing

• Meal planning and preparation

• Light housekeeping, laundry, and running errands

• Medication reminders and picking up prescriptions

• Escorts to doctors’ appointments or meetings

• Help with activities or hobbies

• General companionship

Personal care and companionship caregivers cannot do anything that would be described as clinical. Most importantly, they cannot administer any medications. If someone requires insulin or other injections, they will need to self-administer or have a family member do so.

Also, a caregiver should not be monitoring things such as blood sugar levels or blood pressure.

Depending on your needs and preferences, we can provide 24-hour ‘round-the-clock care or live-in caregiving.

With 24-hour care, different aides will work shifts around the clock (for example, three aides each work 8-hour shifts). That is good for someone who needs care throughout the night as well as the day.

Our live-in caregivers* are ideal for those who need ongoing support throughout the day, but don’t often need help at night. Live-in aides perform all the same duties as hourly aides, but since they live with you, they offer a consistent 24-hour presence in the home for peace of mind. It is a great way to develop a close relationship with one dedicated caregiver.

*Where available. Please contact the local BAYADA personal care and companionship office serving your area for more information.

We strive for continuity in who delivers your care. While allowing for things like vacations and staffing changes, your BAYADA caregiver should always remain the same as long as you are in the same location.

To the extent possible, BAYADA will let you know in advance about any expected changes.

Yes. You will need an authorization from your primary physician to schedule an initial evaluation to start receiving in home care.

In most cases, BAYADA can start providing care within 24 hours (subject to staff availability and other factors).

You can even sign up for services on the weekend in most locations.

Habilitation services vary depending on the needs and abilities of the individual. BAYADA works directly with the client, family, and care team to develop a personalized care plan for safely meeting individual learning goals.

Habilitation services may include help with:

  • Promoting independence

  • Focusing on daily living skills (such as laundry, cleaning and hygiene)

  • Improving communication and interpersonal skills

  • Participating in community opportunities and leisure activities

  • Employment preparation and responsibilities

Contact BAYADA's local Habilitation office nearest to where you need services and they will be happy to answer your eligibility questions and more.

We provide habilitation services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, and other disabilities.

We support individuals throughout their lifespan.

We provide habilitation services in the client’s home and out in the community, depending on individual needs and goals.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.

According to the CDC, autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States.

*We respect the individual preferences for identity first or person-first language. We use autistic child and child with autism interchangeably to honor these differing preferences.

Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is used for the treatment of autism and related learning or social disorders. The aim of autism and ABA therapy is to reduce challenging behaviors and increase functional skills.

Interventions based on the principles of ABA are evidence-based. That is, they are highly contextual and responsive to the specific needs of the client.

ABA therapy has clearly defined procedures to address social, communication, behavioral, and self-help deficits.

ABA is provided either one-on-one or in a group setting by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).

Our behavior analysts and technicians provide ABA services for clients in the comfort of their own homes, schools, and in our BAYADA Centers.

Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each client has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. We work closely with each individual to thoroughly understand those factors and design a customized plan to best help each individual succeed at home, school, and in their community.

In general, our client care process may include:

• Assessment for general level of function and key areas of need

• Creating a treatment plan

• Progress reports

• Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)

• Behavior intervention plan

• Ongoing plan and program updates and modifications

• Data collection and reporting

There are many teaching techniques appropriate to autism and ABA therapy and not all of them will apply to every client. Some of the more common therapies include:

• Errorless teaching – a method that reduces errors and frustration while increasing confidence

• Visual supports – using pictures and other visual aids to help clients who have difficulty with language

• Verbal behavior – helps connect words to their meaning or purpose in a practical way

• Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT) – breaks skills into modular components to make learning and application easier

• Natural Environment Teaching (NET) – uses the surroundings in a variety of settings as a teaching aid

• Pivotal response treatment – a play-based treatment that helps clients learn behaviors in simulated and real-world contexts

• Practical Function Assessment (PFA) and Skills-Based Treatment (SBT) – help identify and curb destructive behaviors by addressing and changing their rationale

• Daily living skills such as toilet training, feeding, motor skills, and sensory issues

Our behavior analysts and technicians provide Autism and ABA Therapy for clients in the comfort of their own homes and in our BAYADA Center.

Autism and ABA Therapy is provided either one-on-one or in a group setting by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).

A BCBA is a masters-trained professional who administers, conducts, evaluates, and supervises your child’s Autism and ABA Therapy.

An RBT is a registered and trained paraprofessional who administers your child’s Autism and ABA Therapy under the supervision of a BCBA.

This can be highly variable, depending on client needs and how they respond to therapy.
