Prospects
Improve for Nurse Training Legislation
The chances that Congress will pass the Nurse Reinvestment Act during
2001 have improved considerably. According to Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-LA),
chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the legislation "has
moved up in priority" on his committee's agenda ever since the September
11 terrorist attacks heightened lawmakers' awareness of the need for skilled
nursing care. The legislation would provide federal scholarships for nurses
in training and increased government payments for on-the-job training
of nurses.
