Hero of the Quarter
Anne
Norton, RN,
is a Hero on the Home Front to her clients and supervisors alike because
of her skill, caring and reliability. She first joined Bayada Nurses
in 1999 to become the primary nurse for a client whom she initially
met through her family. The client was in the advanced stages of ALS,
and Anne quickly became a confidant and trusted caregiver. When no
one else could convince the client of certain medical needs, Anne
could get through to him. When the client passed away, Anne was present
and continued to offer all of her support, love and encouragement.
She organized all the post-mortem duties and has stayed close the
client's wife and daughter to this day. In 2001, Anne took on three
other cases-some of them quite challenging. With one particular case
that has frequent scheduling difficulties, Anne repeatedly rearranges
her family's schedule to help out and is the epitome of faithfulness
and dedication to nursing and to Bayada.
Barbara Mizialko, LPN, is a Hero on
the Home Front to her clients and supervisors alike because of her
skill, caring and reliability. Her dedication and willingness to go
the extra mile for her clients has truly endeared her to her clients
and the office staff. Perhaps the best testament to her positive impact
on her clients' lives is this excerpt from a nomination form submitted
by a client: "Barbara is not only a good nurse but also a good friend.
She bends over backwards to be the sweetest human being on earth.
Last week I had a garage sale. She stopped by on her own time to help
out. She organized the sale, and I could have never done it without
her. She moved items for sale from my home into the garage, where
she organized, displayed and tagged them for sale. She is always outdoing
herself. She treats me with the most delicious food. …I have two dogs,
and she is so nice to them. When she arrives, the dogs run out to
greet her. The dogs are hers more than mine! Barbara's not just gone
the extra mile, but the extra light year!"
Nancy Barnett, HHA, is known throughout
the Charlotte Personal Care Office for her reliability and dedication.
Nancy routinely covers call-outs-sometimes driving more than 60 miles
from her house. Every client she visits loves Nancy, and many of them
request her as their permanent aide. She almost never turns down a
request for help-agreeing to give up her days off and responding at
a moment's notice to help out. Her frequent response when asked to
help out is: "Of course I will go until you can find a replacement.
The client needs my help. How can I sit here knowing that he needs
someone?" Her skill as an aide is praised by supervisors and clients
alike. Perhaps the most dramatic demonstration of the positive impact
of her care is her work with a man who was catastrophically injured
in an on-the-job accident and must now receive help from others with
all his needs. With his independence gone, his definition of how he
is in the world was drastically changed. JoAnn Rathbun, one of Nancy's
Nursing Supervisors, describes it best: "Nancy helped this man to
regain his sense of self. She encouraged him in every way. She protected
his dignity. She found the sparks of his former drive and fanned the
ashes of his determination. She praised him when he did extra physical
therapy…she sat with him while he renewed him mind spiritually, studying
the bible together. She was also a caring support to the client's
wife. Nancy's dedication to be there every day to help him in his
recovery has paid off. His doctors say he is doing so well that he
no longer needs 24-hour care. Nancy has been an integral part in this
one man's new beginning. Nancy has walked with this man down the path
toward his new reality, and the future looks bright." |
